AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lake Ida is a large, crystal-clear lake in Douglas County, Minnesota, just northwest of the city of Alexandria. Spanning over 4,400 acres with 21 miles of shoreline and depths reaching 106 feet, it is one of the most scenic and rewarding lakes in central Minnesota's Alexandria Lakes Area.↗↗
What sets Lake Ida apart is the remarkable clarity of its water—visibility frequently exceeds 16 feet, genuinely unusual for a lake this size—and its complex underwater structure that supports an exceptionally diverse fish community. The lake draws anglers, paddlers, and families from the Twin Cities region (about 130 miles southeast) who want a genuine Minnesota lake experience without the crowds of resort-heavy destinations.↗↗
Fishing
Lake Ida's reputation as a fishery is the reason many visitors come, and for good reason. The lake's complex bottom structure—shifting from sandbars to rocky points to deep basins—creates habitat for a remarkably wide array of species. Spring brings crappie and walleye into shallower bays, while the summer months offer largemouth and smallmouth bass along weedy shorelines and rocky points. Northern pike are abundant, and the occasional muskie makes its way onto a line for anglers who put in the effort.
