Seminole Island

A quiet island in Ohio's Indian Isles

Indian Lake began life as a shallow reservoir for the old Miami & Erie Canal, and when the canal era faded the water stayed on as a resort playground. Today the lake is dotted with named islands — Lake Ridge, Shawnee, Miami, Tecumseh and others that make up the 'Indian Isles' chain arcing through the center of the water. Seminole Island is one of these, a low-lying spit of land ringed by the lake and reached through the surrounding township road network near O'Connor Point.↗↗

There is no visitor center, admission gate or fixed 'attraction' here. Seminole Island is essentially a small residential lake community, the kind of place you come to stay a while rather than pass through. The charm is in the slower rhythm: cottages and lakehouses facing the water, docks and boats, and the open reach of the reservoir in every direction. It is most rewarding as a base for a weekend on Indian Lake than as a single sightseeing stop.↗↗

Time on the water

The lake itself is the main event. Indian Lake is one of Ohio's most popular boating waters, with no horsepower limits, five public launch ramps and seasonal docks run through Indian Lake State Park. From an island stay you can cast off for a cruise, pull up at a beach, or simply watch the boats cross the open 'zone' where water-skiing and tubing are permitted.↗

Anglers have plenty to chase, too. Indian Lake is nationally recognized for its saugeye fishery and holds healthy populations of crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, white bass and channel and flathead catfish — a shallow, productive lake that rewards both shore and boat fishing. Remember that Ohio fishing regulations apply and a valid license is required for anyone 16 and older.↗↗

If you would rather paddle than motor, the lake's marinas and rental outfits offer pontoons, kayaks and waverunners, many with daily and weekly options. A kayak is a particularly pleasant way to slip through the channels between the Indian Isles and see islands like Seminole from the waterline.↗

Around the lake from your island base

The villages ringing the water make easy day trips. Russells Point, on the lake's south end, is home to the historic Sandy Beach Bridge — a 1920s footbridge and the last remnant of the old 'Million Dollar Playground' amusement park, now restored, re-lit and walkable again. The village of Lakeview lies a few miles to the northwest, and the pastoral Bickham Covered Bridge sits about two and a half miles to the southeast for a quick photo stop.↗↗

For land-based recreation, Indian Lake State Park provides two public swimming beaches (Old Field Beach and Fox Island Beach), a paved bike trail along the west and south banks, walking loops such as the Pew Island causeway trail with wide views over the lake, picnic areas, a seasonal nature center, and a campground with lakeside sites. It is the natural complement to a quiet night on the island.↗

Making the most of a visit

Plan around the season. Indian Lake is most alive in summer, when the beaches are open, rentals run daily, and the lake calendar peaks around the July 4 fireworks and Labor Day weekend gatherings. The resort character of islands like Seminole means a lakeside rental — a cabin or lakehouse with water access, a firepit, and perhaps a boat or golf cart — is the most natural way to experience the place, since the island is private residential land rather than a public park.↗↗

Keep expectations grounded: there are no posted hours, fees or dedicated facilities for the island itself, and access is governed by the lake and the surrounding township roads. Check beach water-quality advisories before swimming, carry a fishing license if you plan to cast, and treat the shoreline and the birds that nest here — the lake sits on a major migration route — with a light footprint. With a boat, a beach and the slow island evening, Seminole Island offers the particular, unhurried pleasure of an Ohio lake summer.↗↗↗
