Baan Say-La Guest House

The best time to visit is from November to February, when days are warm and dry with low humidity, especially December and January. March and April are the hottest months, with April also seeing more rain. The rainy season runs from May through October, with the heaviest downpours from July to September. If you can handle the heat, April offers the famous Songkran festival, but the dry, cooler months are the most comfortable for exploring.

Stay in the Old City for temples and walking access to Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. The Night Bazaar area suits evening markets and riverside dining, with Anantara Chiang Mai Resort nearby. Nimmanhemin is a lively neighborhood with cafes and boutiques, home to U Nimman Chiang Mai. Riverside areas offer a quieter stay, with Cross Chiang Mai Riverside and Raya Heritage as options.

Start with Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, the mountain temple with sweeping city views. In the old city, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan are the most impressive historic temples. For a quieter, forested setting, visit Wat Umong Suan Putthatham and nearby Wat Pha Lad. Mon Jam offers a scenic highland viewpoint, and the Chiang Mai Night Safari is a family-friendly evening option.

Full-day tours from Chiang Mai go to the Mae Taeng area for elephant sanctuaries, bamboo rafting, and waterfalls, and to Chiang Rai for the White and Blue Temples. A cooking class at an organic farm is also a popular day trip. For a classic excursion, Doi Inthanon National Park and the ancient city of Lamphun are well-known day trips from Chiang Mai.

Plan 4 to 5 days. In 3 days, see Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, plus the Night Safari and Mon Jam. Add a fourth day for Wat Umong and a cooking class. A day trip to Chiang Rai's temples or an elephant sanctuary needs an extra day.
