AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a small village shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, set in the open farmland of Bhesakh and Bhaisena Ka Pura in Deeg tehsil, Bharatpur district of eastern Rajasthan. Far from the grand monuments of the nearby heritage towns, it is a working neighbourhood temple where the local community comes to offer prayers to the blue-throated form of Shiva known as Neelkanth.↗↗
Its appeal is devotional and rural rather than architectural: a quiet, simple place of worship in the heart of the old Braj countryside, most lively during the month of Shravan (Sawan) and on Mondays, when Shiva devotees gather for darshan in the surrounding villages of the Deeg belt.↗↗
The Blue-Throated Shiva
Neelkanth - literally "blue throat" - is one of the most beloved names of Shiva, recalling the myth in which he swallowed the poison that churned up from the ocean of milk so that the world could be saved, his throat turning an enduring shade of blue. Temples raised in this name across north India are places where devotees seek the easy grace of Bholenath, the "simple god" who is said to be pleased by even a little water offered with a sincere heart.
