AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tarihi Çağlak Kalesi is a reconstructed castle-like tower set in the Çağlak recreation area northeast of Akhisar, Manisa, overlooking the vast plain where the ancient city of Thyatira once stood. Built in 2006 by the local Forestry Directorate as part of a woodland picnic ground, the structure evokes the many fortifications that guarded this strategic crossroads through millennia of history.↗↗
While the interior shows signs of neglect, the climb to the top rewards visitors with sweeping panoramic views across pine forests, olive groves, and the Akhisar plain stretching toward distant hills. It is a low-key, free sightseeing spot rather than a polished tourist attraction.↗
A Castle with Deep Roots
Akhisar — the ancient Thyatira — has been continuously inhabited for roughly nine thousand years and changed hands among Seleucids, the Kingdom of Pergamon, Romans, Byzantines, Sassanids, Arabs, the Turkish beyliks, and finally the Ottomans. Each era left its mark on the region's fortifications. When Saruhan Bey conquered Akhisar in 1315, he ordered the原有 castle demolished so it could not be reused by its Byzantine defenders, only to see it rebuilt under subsequent Ottoman administration. Mongol armies under Timur's son Emirşah burned it in 1402; Celali rebels damaged it again in 1596; and by the mid-nineteenth century, the once-mighty citadel had been looted into near-ruin. The British traveller and artist Thomas Allom sketched Akhisar's castle in the 1840s, capturing what remained of the medieval walls before they vanished entirely.
