AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Çandarlı Plajı is the main beach of a little seaside town on the Çandarlı Bay, in the Dikili district of İzmir's north Aegean coast. It carries an international Blue Flag for clean water and managed facilities, and its signature image is swimmers and sun-loungers set against the towers of Çandarlı Castle rising from the headland behind the sand.↗↗
What makes it special is the pairing: a genuinely free, family-friendly town beach you can simply walk onto, with a real Genoese-Ottoman fortress and the buried ancient port of Pitane as the backdrop. The town sprawls over a narrow peninsula on the gulf, about 20 km south of Dikili centre and roughly 100 km north of İzmir, so it reads as an easy, uncrowded alternative to the busier resort strips further south.↗↗
A Blue Flag beach beneath a Genoese castle
The beach in front of the fortress, known locally as Kale Önü, is the postcard version of Çandarlı: a strip of sand roughly 200 metres long where the medieval walls of the castle loom directly behind the shoreline. It holds a Blue Flag, the environmental award given to beaches with regularly tested, clean seawater and proper on-site services, and a lifeguard is posted during the season. As a public halk plajı it is free to use, with food-and-drink facilities right on the sand, which is part of its charm: this is the everyday beach of a working coastal town rather than a gated resort.
