AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tarihi Taşhan is a remarkably well-preserved 13th-century Seljuk caravanserai in the small district of Çay, along the road between Afyonkarahisar and Konya. Built in 1278, its fortress-like square plan makes it the only known example of this layout in all of Anatolian Seljuk inn architecture — and a carved snow leopard above the entrance marks the signature of the master builder.↗↗
After decades of neglect, the building was fully restored by Turkey's General Directorate of Foundations and completed in 2016. Today it serves as a charming family tea garden, giving visitors the rare chance to sit inside a genuine Seljuk monument while drinking çay.↗

A Snow Leopard's Signature
The most striking detail at Taşhan is carved directly above the entrance: a snow leopard (pars) in relief. This is the personal emblem of the architect Oğul Bey, son of Mehmet, who built the caravanserai in 1278 on the orders of the Seljuk nobleman Ebülmücahit Yusuf Bey during the reign of Sultan III. Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev. The same leopard motif also appears on the nearby Taş Cami (Stone Mosque), confirming that both buildings came from the same workshop and belonged to a single külliye complex that originally included a madrasa, mosque, bathhouse, and the caravanserai.
