AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked along the Aegean coast where the Menderes and Selçuk districts of İzmir meet, near the seaside settlement of Ahmetbeyli, Yoncaköy Beach is the kind of low-key family beach that locals have long kept to themselves. About 57 kilometres from İzmir city centre, it earns its popularity on two simple promises: warm, glass-clear water that stays shallow for a long way out, and a wide stretch of soft, fine sand under a backdrop of green hills.↗↗↗
This is not a party strip or a concrete-fronted resort, but a relaxed public beach woven into a quiet summer-residence neighbourhood. Entry to the sand is free, a small concession rents out loungers and parasols, and the draw is the gentle, wave-free sea that makes it a favourite for families with young children.↗↗
A shallow, warm sea made for families
The defining feature of Yoncaköy is its water. The seabed drops away so gradually that you can walk out a long way before the sea reaches your chest, with some accounts putting the shallow shelf several hundred metres offshore. There are no sudden drop-offs and, on most days, no real waves—just a calm, gently lapping sea that warms up quickly. For anyone swimming with small children, or for less confident swimmers, that combination of warmth, clarity and a smooth entry is the main reason people keep coming back.
