Stayokay Maastricht - Hostel

The best time to visit is May through September, when days are longest and temperatures range from 18°C to 23°C. June is the driest month with only 10 rain days, while July and August stay warm but bring more showers. April and October are cooler and quieter, with fewer crowds. Winter months are damp and chilly, with the most rain in November.

For first-time visitors, the Binnenstad (old center) around Vrijthof and the Markt puts you close to the main sights, shops, and restaurants; Le Theatre Hotel and Maison Haas Hustinx & Spa are on Vrijthof. The Kommelkwartier, just west of the center, is calm and leafy, with the Kruisherenhotel Maastricht. Across the Maas, Wijck is a lively quarter with a mix of cafés and the Townhouse Design Hotel & Spa. Heugem, south of the center, suits those wanting a quiet, green stay near the river, where Landgoed Kasteel de Hoogenweerth sits.

Start at Sint Servaasbrug, Maastricht's oldest bridge, for classic views over the Maas. Basilica of Our Lady and Basilica of Saint Servatius are both worth the stop for their Romanesque architecture and historic interiors. Stadspark offers a scenic green escape right by the river. For depth, climb Sint Pieter Fort for panoramic views over the city and the river valley. The Caves Zonneberg and Maastricht Underground tours let you explore the old marl tunnels beneath the hill.

Full-day tours from Maastricht head to Valkenburg, with its castle ruins and caves, and to the historic city of Aachen, known for its cathedral. If you prefer a shorter trip, the nearby town of Liège offers a lively riverside center. These are the main day-trip options from the city.

Two days let you see the inner city comfortably: Stadspark, Sint Servaasbrug, both basilicas, and Helpoort. A third day adds the deeper sights like Sint Pieter Fort and the Zonneberg or North Caves. If you plan a day trip to the surrounding Limburg countryside, add one more day. Two days is the right baseline for the main sights.
