The best time to visit Sapporo is from May to June, when temperatures are mild (17-22°C) and rain is less frequent. September is also pleasant with warm days and the fewest rain days. July and August are the hottest and most humid months, while December through February bring cold, snowy conditions. The Sapporo Snow Festival in February is famous, but the city is at its most comfortable in late spring and early autumn.

For first-time visitors, stay in Susukino, the entertainment and dining hub, with easy access to nightlife and the Quintessa Hotel Sapporo Susukino. Full-day tours from Sapporo go to Lake Toya and Bear Ranch, Noboribetsu with its hot springs, Niseko, the Hill of the Buddha, Biei and Furano for their flower fields, and Jozankei for Ainu culture. Otaru is also a common day trip, known for its canal and glassware.
